Pune: Months of sustained student-led protests have resulted in the suspension of municipal waste dumping along a stretch of the Mula-Mutha river near Loni Kalbhor, marking a significant intervention in a long-running environmental issue that had threatened public health, river ecology and educational institutions. The development highlights the growing demand for accountable waste management as Pune’s expanding peri-urban areas struggle to keep pace with infrastructure needs.

For several years, waste generated by nearby gram panchayats had been transported to government land adjoining the river, where repeated dumping gradually encroached upon the watercourse. Environmental assessments and official inspections later indicated that seasonal flooding had reduced the available land, causing increasing volumes of waste to spill directly into the river channel and adjoining drainage networks. The Mula Mutha river waste issue gained urgency after a major landfill fire earlier this year sent dense smoke across a nearby education campus, disrupting academic activities and raising serious health concerns. Orders preventing further dumping at the disputed site have since shifted attention towards ensuring compliance and preventing future encroachments. Authorities have since initiated the removal of accumulated waste from the affected stretch, while educational institutions and local administrations continue to seek a durable solution. Urban development experts argue that sustained monitoring, scientific waste processing and coordinated planning between local bodies will be essential to prevent similar situations elsewhere. As Pune continues to urbanise, the episode serves as a reminder that effective waste governance remains central to building healthier, climate-resilient and citizen-focused cities.
