Tambaram Legacy Waste Cleanup Gains Significant Momentum

Tambaram City Municipal Corporation has completed nearly half of its large-scale legacy waste biomining programme at the Appur landfill, marking a significant step in reducing decades of accumulated municipal waste. The progress is expected to improve land recovery, reduce environmental risks and strengthen scientific waste management practices across one of the Chennai metropolitan region’s fastest-growing urban local bodies.

Municipal officials indicate that approximately 2.7 lakh tonnes of waste have been processed from an estimated six lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste under an ongoing biomining initiative valued at around ₹36 crore. The exercise forms part of the corporation’s broader strategy to transition away from conventional dumping practices while reclaiming landfill space for future civic use. Tambaram, which spans 70 municipal wards across five administrative zones, produces nearly 450 tonnes of municipal solid waste every day. Managing this growing waste stream has become increasingly important as rapid urbanisation, expanding residential development and commercial activity continue to place pressure on civic infrastructure.

As part of efforts to improve collection and transportation efficiency, the corporation has upgraded its waste logistics network with sealed transport containers and hydraulic loading vehicles designed to minimise leachate leakage, littering and odour during transit. Non-biodegradable waste is compressed at transfer facilities before being transported to the Appur landfill, while biodegradable waste is diverted for composting, reducing the volume reaching disposal sites. Urban planning experts note that legacy waste biomining has emerged as a critical tool for Indian cities attempting to address long-standing landfill pollution. Besides recovering valuable land, biomining helps lower methane emissions, minimise groundwater contamination and reduce fire hazards commonly associated with ageing dumpsites. However, they caution that successful biomining must be complemented by robust waste segregation at source and sustained recycling systems to prevent fresh waste accumulation.Despite the progress, residents continue to report uneven solid waste collection services in several neighbourhoods. Citizen groups have raised concerns over recurring illegal dumping around lakes, ponds and other environmentally sensitive locations, arguing that gaps in collection schedules encourage indiscriminate disposal. Environmental observers warn that waste entering urban water bodies threatens biodiversity, deteriorates water quality and increases flooding risks during heavy rainfall by obstructing natural drainage systems.

Municipal authorities are expected to continue processing the remaining landfill stock in phases, with the project targeted for completion next year. Officials also plan to strengthen monitoring of waste transportation and disposal routes to discourage unauthorised dumping and improve operational accountability. As Chennai’s metropolitan region expands, urban specialists say the experience in Tambaram illustrates that landfill remediation alone cannot deliver long-term sustainability. Continued investment in decentralised waste processing, citizen participation in source segregation and stronger enforcement against illegal dumping will remain essential if cities are to build cleaner, climate-resilient and resource-efficient urban environments.
