Chennai Metro Phase Two Clears Key Construction Milestone

Construction on a crucial elevated section of the Chennai Metro Phase II network has reached another engineering milestone, with foundation and major structural works completed along a significant stretch of the city’s Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR). The progress marks an important step in expanding mass transit across one of Chennai’s fastest-growing employment corridors, where mounting traffic congestion and rapid urbanisation continue to challenge daily mobility.

The latest development covers the elevated section between Nehru Nagar and Sholinganallur on Corridor-3, part of the larger Madhavaram–SIPCOT route. According to project officials, all planned foundation piles for this package have now been completed, alongside the casting of every precast U-shaped girder required for the viaduct. These structural components form the backbone of elevated metro tracks and allow construction to progress towards pier caps, track installation and station works. Delivering this phase posed considerable logistical challenges because the alignment passes through one of Chennai’s busiest technology and residential corridors. Construction activities had to be coordinated while maintaining traffic movement across key junctions, particularly around Thoraipakkam and Sholinganallur, where existing flyovers, commercial development and high commuter volumes left limited room for large-scale engineering operations. Infrastructure specialists note that completing foundation works in such dense urban environments often reduces risks of future construction delays.

The Chennai Metro Phase II programme represents the city’s largest public transport investment to date, adding nearly 119 kilometres of new rail infrastructure through three corridors and 128 stations. Once operational, Corridor-3 is expected to improve connections between northern Chennai and the southern IT and industrial belt, providing an alternative to heavily congested road networks that currently depend on private vehicles and bus services. Urban planners argue that expanding high-capacity public transport is increasingly essential as Chennai continues to witness outward urban growth. The OMR corridor has transformed into a major economic zone over the past two decades, attracting technology parks, educational institutions, residential developments and commercial projects. However, transport infrastructure has struggled to keep pace with this expansion, resulting in longer commuting times and rising environmental pressures from vehicle emissions.

Experts also emphasise that metro investments deliver broader urban benefits when supported by pedestrian infrastructure, integrated bus services and transit-oriented development around stations. Such measures encourage greater public transport use, reduce dependence on private vehicles and create more accessible neighbourhoods for workers and residents alike. Construction across the wider Phase II network continues simultaneously on multiple packages, with different stretches progressing through foundation, viaduct, station and systems work. The full network is targeted for completion by the end of 2028, after which Chennai is expected to gain one of India’s most extensive urban rail systems. The coming phases will focus on track laying, electrical systems, station finishing and network integration, determining how quickly the expanded metro can begin reshaping mobility across the metropolitan region.
