Pune is set for a major transformation of its rail network as a new wave of railway infrastructure investments seeks to address mounting passenger demand, improve operational efficiency and strengthen regional connectivity across one of India’s fastest-growing urban centres. A package of rail projects valued at nearly ₹600 crore has been outlined for the Pune metropolitan region, with authorities aiming to significantly increase train-handling capacity over the next few years. The initiative comes at a time when Pune’s population growth, expanding employment corridors and rising intercity travel demand are placing greater pressure on existing transport infrastructure.
The proposed railway expansion extends beyond Pune station and covers a wider urban rail ecosystem including Hadapsar, Khadki, Shivajinagar, Ghorpadi, Phursungi and Alandi. Urban planners note that such network-based planning is increasingly essential for metropolitan regions where passenger movement is no longer concentrated around a single city centre. One of the most significant components of the programme is a large-scale station and yard modernisation effort designed to remove operational bottlenecks. Pune station is expected to see a substantial increase in platform capacity, while maintenance activities currently occupying valuable rail space will gradually be relocated to dedicated facilities outside the core station area. This shift is expected to improve train scheduling flexibility and support higher service frequencies.
The railway expansion programme also includes upgrades at suburban stations. Additional platforms and operational facilities at key locations are intended to accommodate future passenger growth while reducing congestion across the network. Industry observers suggest that these improvements could help rail transport capture a larger share of daily and regional travel, easing pressure on roads that already face heavy traffic volumes. A major element of the plan is the development of a new terminal facility at Alandi using existing railway land. By leveraging publicly owned land assets, authorities aim to avoid large acquisition costs while accelerating project delivery. The proposed terminal is expected to serve as an operational hub capable of supporting dozens of train movements each day, creating additional capacity for new services and long-distance connections.
Officials indicate that the railway expansion could ultimately enable the introduction of around 20 additional train services. For Pune’s economy, better rail connectivity is expected to strengthen links with industrial clusters, educational institutions, pilgrimage centres and emerging growth regions across Maharashtra and beyond.
From a sustainability perspective, transport experts argue that expanding rail infrastructure remains one of the most effective ways to accommodate urban growth while limiting dependence on private vehicles. Increased rail capacity can contribute to lower road congestion, reduced fuel consumption and improved mobility access for a wider section of society. With implementation targeted over the next three years, the success of the railway expansion will depend not only on construction progress but also on how effectively the new infrastructure integrates with the city’s broader mobility network. As Pune continues to grow, the ability to provide reliable and efficient public transport will remain central to its long-term urban resilience and economic competitiveness.
