Thousands of suburban rail passengers travelling between Tambaram and Chennai Beach continue to experience delays during peak hours despite the commissioning of Chennai’s dedicated fourth railway corridor earlier this year, raising concerns over whether critical infrastructure investments are translating into meaningful improvements for daily commuters.
The ₹274-crore railway expansion project was introduced to separate long-distance, freight and suburban operations, with the expectation that it would enhance punctuality and ease congestion across one of the city’s busiest commuter stretches. However, regular users of the network say travel times remain unpredictable during the morning rush, particularly on services originating from the southern suburbs. The bottleneck has emerged in the section approaching Chennai Egmore, where operational constraints are forcing fast and air-conditioned EMU services to share tracks with conventional suburban trains before reaching Chennai Beach. As a result, all-stop local services carrying large numbers of workers, students and traders are experiencing unscheduled halts and slower movement.
The challenge has exposed how infrastructure additions alone may not be sufficient unless supporting facilities are completed simultaneously. Railway officials familiar with the matter indicated that the absence of a dedicated platform for fast services at Chennai Fort station continues to restrict the full utilisation of the fourth corridor. Since a substantial number of government employees rely on the Fort station halt, bypassing the stop is not being considered. According to officials, plans to create the required infrastructure have encountered delays linked to land acquisition issues involving a small parcel needed for the project. Until the pending matter is resolved, train movements are expected to remain constrained during the busiest hours of the day. For commuters using the Chennai Fourth Rail Corridor, the period between 8.30 am and 10 am has become particularly challenging. Passengers report increasing dependence on alternate transport modes, including Metro Rail and road-based services, when suburban trains fail to maintain schedules. However, affordability continues to make EMU services the preferred option for thousands of residents travelling from Tambaram, Chengalpattu and neighbouring areas into the city.
Urban mobility experts note that seamless interchange facilities and integrated station infrastructure are becoming increasingly important as Chennai’s population and employment centres expand. Delays affecting public transport systems can have wider economic implications through lost productivity, higher travel costs and increased pressure on roads.
