The Maharashtra government has constituted a high-level coordination committee to accelerate the execution of Pune’s major transport infrastructure projects, including strategic tunnel corridors and the long-pending Ring Road network. The move is intended to improve inter-agency coordination, reduce implementation delays and strengthen mobility across one of India’s fastest-growing metropolitan regions.
The newly formed committee, chaired at the state level, is expected to periodically review the progress of critical road infrastructure, monitor bottlenecks and facilitate quicker decision-making among departments responsible for land acquisition, environmental approvals, utility shifting and project execution. Urban planners believe such coordinated oversight is increasingly essential as Pune faces mounting pressure from rapid urban expansion and rising vehicle ownership. Among the priority initiatives are proposed tunnel links designed to reduce travel time across congested city corridors and the comprehensive Ring Road project, which aims to divert through-traffic away from the urban core. Infrastructure specialists note that delays in large transport projects often stem from fragmented administrative processes rather than engineering challenges alone.
