Pune: The Maharashtra government has constituted a high-level committee to investigate the fatal collapse at the Moshi waste-to-energy facility in Pimpri Chinchwad, where nine people lost their lives after a massive mound of legacy waste buried an administrative building. The five-member panel will investigate the Pune Moshi plant collapse, establish the sequence of events, identify administrative and technical lapses, assign accountability and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents. The committee comprises senior government officials alongside specialists in geotechnical engineering, environmental management and solid waste management, supported by representatives from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. Authorities have directed the committee to submit a preliminary report within one month, followed by a comprehensive report within two months detailing its technical findings and recommendations. The investigation will assess slope stability, waste handling practices, structural safety, regulatory compliance and the implementation of operational safeguards at the facility.
The tragedy unfolded after prolonged monsoon rainfall reportedly destabilised a large mound of legacy waste, causing it to slide into a three-storey administrative building located within the waste processing complex. Parallel to the state inquiry, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has initiated its own administrative review.
