Pune: Rail connectivity between Pune and Mumbai has strengthened after Central Railway restored a second operational track on the Karjat–Lonavala ghat section following monsoon-triggered landslides. The reopening enables the resumption of key passenger services and improves reliability on one of western India’s busiest transport corridors, easing commuter movement while supporting regional economic activity during the monsoon season.
The restored section forms part of the steep and strategically important Bhor Ghat railway corridor, which links Pune with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The route had witnessed disruptions after persistent rainfall triggered landslides and debris accumulation, affecting train operations and reducing line capacity. Restoration of the second operational track is expected to improve scheduling flexibility while reducing delays across the corridor. With the Pune Mumbai rail corridor regaining additional capacity, Central Railway has confirmed the return of regular operations for prominent passenger services, including the Deccan Queen and Intercity Express, from 16 July. These trains serve thousands of daily commuters, business travellers, students and tourists travelling between Maharashtra’s two major urban centres.
Railway engineers continue to work on restoring the remaining Up line affected by the monsoon. Officials are maintaining close surveillance of vulnerable hill slopes, drainage systems and track infrastructure to minimise the impact of further rainfall. The ghat section remains one of the most technically challenging railway stretches in the country due to its steep gradients, rock cuttings and heavy seasonal precipitation. Transport experts note that uninterrupted movement along the Pune Mumbai rail corridor is vital for western Maharashtra’s economy.
