Pune’s long-pending rail connectivity ambitions received a significant push with railway authorities finalising a revised corridor linking Pune and Nashik through key industrial and pilgrimage centres across northern Maharashtra. The development is expected to improve regional mobility, strengthen economic integration and create an alternative transport network connecting some of the state’s fastest-growing urban and industrial zones. The updated Pune Nashik rail corridor follows the completion of technical planning and route studies that led authorities to abandon the originally proposed alignment in favour of a more practical and cost-efficient alternative. Officials indicated that the revised route would deliver comparable travel benefits while serving a larger population base and reducing project expenditure substantially.
Under the new plan, the corridor will connect Pune with Ahilyanagar, Sainagar Shirdi, Puntamba and Nashik, while also passing through the Chakan industrial region. Transport experts note that integrating manufacturing clusters into railway planning can help reduce logistics costs, improve freight efficiency and support balanced regional development. Earlier proposals had raised concerns regarding potential impacts on a globally significant radio astronomy research facility located in the region. Urban infrastructure specialists point out that large transport projects increasingly require careful alignment planning to balance development needs with scientific, environmental and public interests. The revised network is also expected to support sustainable mobility objectives. Railway transport generally offers a lower-carbon alternative to road-based travel, particularly on heavily used intercity corridors. As Maharashtra seeks to accommodate rising travel demand, investments in rail infrastructure are increasingly viewed as essential for reducing congestion, lowering emissions and improving regional accessibility. Several supporting railway works linked to the corridor are already progressing. Line doubling projects on existing sections are being completed in phases to increase capacity and improve operational efficiency. In addition, plans for new double-line infrastructure between Pune and Ahilyanagar through the Chakan belt are expected to create the backbone for future passenger and freight services.
