Pune Modified Silencers Face Wider Police Crackdown

Pune has intensified enforcement against motorcycles fitted with unauthorised exhaust systems, with police expanding checks across multiple parts of the city after repeated complaints about disruptive late-night noise. The latest action has brought the scale of the problem into sharper focus, while residents are asking whether periodic seizures can deliver lasting relief in neighbourhoods where homes, hospitals and educational institutions share increasingly busy roads.

The citywide operation has already resulted in 123 motorcycles fitted with modified silencers being seized in a single day, according to police officials. Checks have covered areas including Khadki, Wanowrie, Viman Nagar, Kalepadal, Wagholi, Dattawadi, Nanded City, Shivajinagar and Yerawada. The enforcement is also moving beyond individual riders. Police have indicated that garages and other businesses involved in supplying or installing unauthorised exhaust equipment will face action. That approach matters because simply removing a silencer from one motorcycle does little to prevent another replacement from being fitted. In one recent case in the Kalepadal area, police detained 13 young riders and seized 11 motorcycles. Two garage operators were also proceeded against in connection with the installations, according to police reporting. Earlier enforcement in the same broader corridor had produced a similar response from residents: noise returned soon after vehicles were seized or modified equipment removed.

The issue is larger than vehicle compliance. Urban noise is an environmental quality problem that can affect sleep, learning and the usability of residential streets. Pune’s dense mix of housing, workplaces, schools and healthcare facilities means that disturbances generated on a road can quickly become a neighbourhood-level problem. The challenge for enforcement agencies is therefore consistency. Industry observers and urban planners say targeted drives can create a short-term deterrent, but sustained monitoring is harder across a city with a large two-wheeler population. Enforcement is likely to be more effective when vehicle checks, garage-level scrutiny and complaint-based responses operate together rather than as isolated campaigns. There is also a citizen-safety dimension. Residents have reported being reluctant to confront riders directly, particularly during late-night incidents. Pune Police already provides online citizen services and channels for reporting traffic-related issues, giving authorities an avenue to connect complaints with enforcement activity.

For a city seeking cleaner and more liveable neighbourhoods, controlling avoidable road noise is part of managing the public realm. The immediate test will be whether Pune modified silencers remain a priority after the current drive ends. Regular patrols, accountable garage enforcement and transparent reporting of repeat violations could determine whether the intervention becomes routine urban management rather than another temporary crackdown.
