Pune is on the cusp of a significant upgrade to its urban infrastructure as the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) announces that the highly anticipated double-decker flyover at the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) Chowk is nearing completion and is slated to open to commuters by June 30, 2025.
This ambitious project, strategically located on Ganeshkhind Road, one of Pune’s most heavily trafficked arterial routes, is designed to dramatically reduce traffic congestion and streamline vehicular movement across key junctions. The innovative two-tier structure will feature the elevated Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro line on its upper deck, while the lower ramps will facilitate the smooth flow of vehicular traffic. This integrated design is specifically aimed at alleviating bottlenecks at crucial intersections including Senapati Bapat Road, Baner, Aundh, Pashan, and University Circle. Once fully operational, the flyover is projected to significantly reduce travel times along these vital stretches, enhancing urban mobility and connectivity.
PMRDA officials have confirmed that the structural work is in its final stages, with all 32 supporting pillars now erected. The installation of substantial steel girders, each measuring 55 metres in length and up to 20 metres in width, is progressing steadily. Pillar construction at strategic points such as E-Square and Baner Road has already been completed, and the essential utility shifting work near the Baner ramp is also nearing its final phase. While the initial project deadline was set for May 2025, minor delays attributed to land acquisition issues and necessary road widening have slightly shifted the timeline to the end of June. However, significant portions of the flyover are now approaching operational readiness. In a move that will provide immediate relief to thousands of daily commuters, the Aundh and Shivajinagar ramps are nearing completion and are scheduled for a partial opening to public use by May 20, 2025. The Aundh ramp is expected to be fully completed and operational by mid-June, further easing traffic flow. However, the ramps on the Pashan side are still under construction and are anticipated to take a few more months to reach completion.
This double-decker flyover project in Pune is not merely a standalone infrastructure development; it is strategically aligned with the broader Pune Metro project, offering an integrated and future-proof transportation solution. By accommodating the metro rail line on its upper deck, the structure lays the groundwork for enhanced multi-modal connectivity in the future, promoting a more sustainable and efficient urban transport ecosystem. The design also incorporates provisions for pedestrian access and is intended to seamlessly interlink with proposed Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) routes, fostering a holistic approach to urban mobility. While the construction phase has inevitably led to traffic snarls around the project zone, causing inconvenience to daily commuters, residents, and local business owners have consistently voiced their support for the project as a crucial long-term solution to Pune’s escalating traffic challenges, particularly in light of the city’s growing population and vehicle density. They have, however, urged the PMRDA to expedite the remaining work to minimise ongoing disruptions.
Notably, the SPPU Chowk flyover project secured all necessary environmental clearances prior to its commencement, and incorporates green construction practices such as the use of prefabricated components, implementation of dust suppression systems, and sourcing of sustainable materials. Experts suggest that this project could serve as a valuable model for mid-sized Indian cities striving to balance essential engineering developments with citizen-centric urban planning principles, promoting both efficiency and environmental responsibility.
Once fully operational, the SPPU Chowk double-decker flyover is projected to significantly reduce signal wait times, minimise vehicular idle time, and contribute to improved air quality in the surrounding area. Authorities are also planning final load testing and surface alignment procedures in the coming weeks in anticipation of its official opening, marking a significant step towards a more efficient and sustainable urban transportation network for Pune.
