Dubai has announced plans for a $35 billion expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), aiming to create the world’s first fully contactless airport terminal.
This initiative is part of Dubai’s broader strategy to enhance passenger experience through advanced technology and sustainable infrastructure. The proposed terminal will leverage biometric identification, artificial intelligence, and automated systems to streamline every aspect of the passenger journey—from check-in to boarding. Traditional processes like manual check-ins, baggage tagging, and immigration queues are set to become obsolete, replaced by seamless, technology-driven alternatives.
Key features include universal baggage barcoding, allowing luggage to be tracked effortlessly from the point of manufacture, and the elimination of physical check-in counters, as airlines will manage passenger information digitally. Biometric systems will enable passengers to move through security and immigration without presenting documents, significantly reducing wait times and enhancing security. The airport’s design also emphasises sustainability, aiming for LEED Gold certification. Eco-friendly elements such as energy-efficient power systems, advanced water conservation methods, and comprehensive waste management are integral to the project, aligning with Dubai’s commitment to sustainable development.
Connectivity is another focal point, with plans for a deep-level underground railway and the adoption of driverless vehicle technology to ensure efficient transportation between the airport and the rest of Dubai. This integration aims to alleviate surface traffic congestion and provide seamless access for travellers. The expansion is expected to significantly boost Dubai’s capacity to handle international travellers, positioning the city as a leading global aviation hub. By embracing cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices, Dubai is setting a new standard for the future of air travel.
