Hyderabad Food Safety Crackdown Seizes 3,546 Kg, Shuts 5 Units

Hyderabad food safety officials suspended the licences of five sweet-manufacturing units and ordered them to stop operations after inspections found hygiene and licensing violations, while seven other establishments, including Karachi Bakery International Pvt Ltd, were issued show-cause notices.

The action was taken by TG-SAFE teams during inspections across 16 sweet-manufacturing and retail units in the CURE region. Thirteen TG-SAFE teams, assisted by Hyderabad police’s H-FAST, seized or discarded 3,546.5 kg of food items valued at ₹16.86 lakh.

G Pulla Reddy Sweets in Sanathnagar accounted for 3,133 kg of the seized food, valued at ₹15.03 lakh. A TG-SAFE official said the unit’s licence was suspended because inspectors found unhygienic conditions and expired food items.

The official said teams found rotten vegetables, rat faeces, improper storage practices, mislabelled food products and expired food items at the establishment. The manufacturing and washing areas were also found to be unhygienic, while food handlers were not maintaining proper hygiene. The unit was additionally found to be operating under an incorrect licence category.

The other establishments whose licences were suspended are Agra Mithai Ghar Restaurant in Charminar, Sweetone Ruchulu in Vanasthalipuram, Balaji Sri Kishan Mithai Bhandar in Falaknuma and Hirani Foods, operating as Minerva Sweets, in Kattedan.

Officials reported violations across the inspected units, including alleged pest infestation, unhygienic kitchens, expired and mislabelled food products, improper storage and the use of newspapers to cover sweets. Some establishments were also found to be operating without valid Food Safety and Standards Authority of India licences.

TG-SAFE issued show-cause notices to Bharat Baklava in Sanathnagar, Karachi Bakery International in Timmapur, Balaji Sweets in Champapet, Mamatha Sweet House in Secunderabad, SK Foods in Kattedan, Hameedi Confectionaries at MJ Market and Annapurna Caterers in Chudi Bazaar.

At Karachi Bakery, inspectors found violations linked to improper storage and expired food items. A TG-SAFE official described the violations as serious, particularly because expired items were present, and said a penalty would be imposed in the coming days.

An improvement notice was issued to Sri Shagun Mithai Vatika in Himayathnagar. The inspected establishments will be reinspected to verify compliance, after which further action, including penalties, will be initiated based on the findings, TG-SAFE officials said.
