Pune is preparing to open the first operational section of its long-awaited Metro Line 3 corridor next month, marking a significant step in the city’s effort to strengthen public transport connectivity between major employment hubs and residential areas. The initial phase of the project is expected to improve mobility for thousands of daily commuters while supporting broader goals of sustainable urban growth and reduced road congestion. The proposed launch involves a 12-kilometre segment connecting key locations on the Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar route. Final commencement, however, remains dependent on statutory safety approvals following inspections by railway safety authorities. Officials overseeing the project are working towards operational readiness while awaiting the completion of the regulatory review process.
The significance of the Pune Metro Line 3 project extends beyond transportation infrastructure. Hinjawadi has evolved into one of India’s largest information technology and employment clusters, attracting a substantial daily workforce from across the metropolitan region. Heavy dependence on private vehicles and road-based transport has resulted in recurring traffic bottlenecks, long commute times and increased emissions along the corridor.
