The upcoming airport in Jewar, positioned as a major aviation gateway for the National Capital Region, is now linking its operations with intercity bus systems to improve ground connectivity to surrounding urban centres. Officials familiar with the plan said the network will initially connect more than 20 routes, spanning major cities such as Agra, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Dehradun and Mathura. The expansion of airport bus connectivity comes at a critical time as India’s new airports increasingly face pressure to solve first and last-mile transport challenges. Urban planners have long argued that aviation-led development often prioritises runways and terminals over seamless commuter access, leading to traffic congestion, private vehicle dependence and uneven regional mobility.

Dedicated pick-up and drop-off infrastructure within the airport precinct is expected to support smoother passenger movement while reducing informal transport bottlenecks that typically emerge around fast-growing airports. A senior transport planner involved in regional infrastructure assessments said the model reflects a wider trend toward multimodal urban mobility, where airports are increasingly seen as integrated transport nodes rather than isolated aviation assets.
