The Union Cabinet has approved a new phase of Ahmedabad’s metro network expansion, clearing a project valued at more than ₹2,169 crore that is expected to enhance connectivity between the city’s northern areas, the international airport and major public destinations. The decision marks another step in strengthening mass transit infrastructure as Ahmedabad prepares for future growth and large-scale events.
The approved Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A project will add a six-kilometre corridor extending from Koteshwar Road to Ahmedabad Airport through five stations, including an underground section. The alignment is intended to improve access to critical transport infrastructure while creating faster and more reliable public transit options for commuters, visitors and airport users. Urban mobility experts suggest that extending metro services to airports can significantly reduce dependence on private vehicles and road-based transport, helping ease congestion on surrounding corridors. Efficient rail links also contribute to lower transport emissions by encouraging greater use of high-capacity public transit, aligning with broader goals of climate-resilient and sustainable city development. Beyond airport access, the corridor is expected to strengthen connectivity to major recreational and sporting infrastructure, including the Sardar Patel Sports Enclave. With Ahmedabad preparing to host international sporting activities in the coming years, integrated public transport systems could play a vital role in managing crowd movement, reducing travel delays and supporting inclusive access for residents and visitors alike.
Infrastructure economists note that investments such as Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A often generate wider economic benefits by improving labour mobility, stimulating commercial activity around stations and supporting transit-oriented urban development. Better multimodal integration can also increase the attractiveness of nearby residential and business districts while enhancing long-term land-use efficiency. The project reflects a broader national emphasis on expanding rail-based urban transport as cities experience rising populations and growing travel demand.
By prioritising mass transit over road expansion alone, policymakers aim to create mobility systems capable of supporting economic productivity while addressing environmental challenges associated with urbanisation. As implementation progresses, attention will likely focus on timely construction, seamless integration with the existing metro network and effective first- and last-mile connectivity.
