A crucial missing segment of the Delhi Mumbai Expressway is set to become operational later this month as authorities prepare to open a nearly five-kilometre underground corridor beneath Rajasthan’s Mukundara Hills landscape.
The infrastructure milestone is expected to complete one of India’s most ambitious highway networks while raising important questions around balancing mobility growth with ecological preservation. Located near Kota, the tunnel forms part of the larger Delhi Mumbai Expressway, a 1,386-kilometre economic corridor designed to connect northern and western India through high-speed, access-controlled road infrastructure. Once fully integrated, transport officials estimate the corridor could reduce end-to-end road travel between the two metros to nearly half its current duration. For freight operators and inter-city travellers, the impact is expected to be immediate. Faster cargo movement could lower fuel consumption, reduce warehousing delays and improve supply chain efficiency across industrial zones spanning Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
Urban economists note that such efficiencies often influence land values and trigger logistics-led real estate expansion along corridor towns. What makes the Kota tunnel distinctive is its ecological setting. Built below a protected tiger habitat, the project reflects an evolving infrastructure model where mobility networks increasingly need to adapt to environmental constraints rather than displace them.
