Civic authorities in Navi Mumbai have intensified monsoon safety measures by disconnecting water supply and sewerage services to a number of residential buildings classified as structurally unsafe. The action is intended to discourage occupancy of buildings identified as posing an immediate risk to life, reinforcing the importance of preventive interventions during the peak rainy season when weakened structures become more vulnerable to collapse. The latest enforcement targets properties categorised as Unsafe Buildings, the highest risk classification assigned to structures considered unsuitable for habitation without major structural intervention or redevelopment. Municipal officials carried out inspections across multiple nodes before disconnecting civic utility connections to buildings that continue to fall within this category.
The affected properties are spread across Belapur, Nerul, Vashi and Koparkhairane, where several ageing housing societies have been identified as requiring urgent evacuation. Civic authorities had previously urged occupants to vacate these premises voluntarily, warning that prolonged rainfall can accelerate structural deterioration and increase the likelihood of accidents. Urban safety experts note that disconnecting essential utility services is often used as a final administrative measure to discourage continued occupation of hazardous structures after repeated notices have been issued.
