Ahmedabad’s northern transport network received a major upgrade with the opening of the new cable-stayed flyover at Bhat Crossroads on the Gandhinagar–Ahmedabad Airport corridor. The 1.48-kilometre structure, developed at an estimated cost of ₹175 crore, is expected to improve traffic movement between Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and the airport zone while supporting the city’s expanding mobility needs.
The newly commissioned flyover creates a grade-separated traffic system at one of the region’s increasingly busy junctions. While vehicles travelling between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar will use the elevated structure, traffic moving along the Sardar Patel Ring Road corridor will continue below, reducing conflict points and improving travel efficiency. Urban transport experts note that such infrastructure interventions are becoming increasingly important as metropolitan regions expand beyond traditional city boundaries. The Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar corridor has witnessed rapid growth in residential development, commercial activity and institutional expansion, increasing pressure on existing road networks. The project was executed jointly by the state Roads and Buildings Department and the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority, with costs shared equally between the two agencies. Alongside the flyover, dedicated service roads have been developed on both sides, adding six lanes to support local traffic movement and improve access towards major routes connecting Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat.
The Bhat Crossroads project is also linked with a wider effort to upgrade infrastructure capacity along the corridor. A separate ₹48 crore bridge expansion project has been initiated for the Narmada Main Canal crossing between Koba Circle and Bhat Circle. The existing six-lane bridge will be expanded into a twelve-lane facility through the construction of additional three-lane structures on either side. Infrastructure planners suggest that widening roads alone cannot address long-term congestion unless combined with integrated urban mobility planning. Better traffic management, public transport connectivity, pedestrian safety measures and climate-resilient construction practices will determine whether new infrastructure can effectively serve growing urban populations. The Bhat flyover represents a shift towards multi-level transport solutions in Ahmedabad’s urban landscape.
However, experts highlight that large road projects must be evaluated not only through reduced travel times but also through their impact on emissions, neighbourhood connectivity and equitable access for all road users. As Ahmedabad continues to expand towards its peripheral areas, the success of projects like the Bhat cable flyover will depend on how well they integrate with broader mobility systems. Future infrastructure planning will need to balance rising vehicle demand with sustainable transport choices to create a more efficient and resilient urban region.
