Mumbai’s public transport network is set for a major expansion after the city’s transport undertaking approved the phased induction of 1,500 air-conditioned electric midi buses. The decision is expected to strengthen first and last-mile connectivity, improve access to metro and suburban rail services, and accelerate the city’s transition towards cleaner and more accessible urban mobility. The new Electric Midi Buses will be introduced in multiple phases through 2026 and 2027 under the national PM E-Drive programme. Designed for operation on narrow roads and densely populated neighbourhoods, the smaller vehicles are intended to improve connectivity in areas where conventional full-sized buses face operational constraints.

Transport planners view the approval as a significant step in building an integrated public transport ecosystem rather than simply expanding fleet numbers. By serving residential areas, commercial districts and metro feeder routes, the buses are expected to reduce dependence on private vehicles for short-distance trips while improving access to high-capacity transit corridors across the city. The Electric Midi Buses have been planned with universal accessibility in mind. Low-floor entry systems will improve boarding for senior citizens, wheelchair users and passengers with reduced mobility, supporting more inclusive public transport. The fleet will also incorporate modern battery technology, air suspension and rapid charging capability to improve operational efficiency while reducing tailpipe emissions. Passenger safety has also been prioritised through the inclusion of intelligent transport management systems, 360-degree surveillance cameras and dedicated fire detection mechanisms for battery compartments. Urban mobility experts note that such technology is becoming increasingly important as electric buses form a larger share of India’s public transport networks, helping operators improve fleet monitoring, passenger security and service reliability.

The phased deployment aligns with broader national and municipal efforts to expand sustainable public transport while reducing dependence on fossil fuel-powered vehicles. Electrification of bus fleets contributes directly to lower urban air pollution, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and quieter city streets, particularly when combined with renewable energy integration and efficient charging infrastructure. Infrastructure economists also point out that investment in electric public transport generates wider economic benefits beyond environmental gains. Better first and last-mile connectivity can increase ridership on metro and suburban rail networks, reduce congestion on major roads and improve access to employment, education and healthcare. For businesses, more reliable public transport can enhance workforce mobility while lowering the economic costs associated with traffic delays. The buses will be inducted in four phases before deployment across multiple depots, supporting gradual operational integration and route optimisation. Industry observers believe the success of the initiative will ultimately depend on charging infrastructure, depot readiness, service frequency and seamless coordination with other public transport systems.
