The government announced plans to develop over 700 wayside amenities (WSAs) along national highways by the financial year 2028-2029.
This ambitious initiative aims to create a network of well-equipped rest stops, significantly improving the convenience and safety of highway journeys across the country. These wayside amenities are designed to cater to the diverse needs of travellers, offering facilities such as fuel stations, electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, clean restrooms, drinking water, ample parking spaces, and a range of food and beverage outlets, including dhabas and restaurants. The strategic placement of these amenities at regular intervals—approximately every 40-60 kilometres—will ensure that drivers and passengers have easy access to essential services, thereby reducing travel fatigue and enhancing road safety. According to officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, a total of 501 WSAs have already been awarded across various national highways and expressways. Of these, 94 amenities are currently operational, with the remaining under development and slated for completion in the coming years. The project is spearheaded by the National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), which oversees the planning, development, and management of these facilities.
A notable feature of this initiative is the incorporation of a digital feedback system at WSAs, enabling users to provide real-time inputs on service quality.
