Narela Housing Push Gains Security and Civic Infrastructure Focus

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Sardar Taranjit Singh Sandhu has directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to provide built-up space for police stations, police chowkis and beats in Narela, as authorities review the delivery of security and civic services alongside the area’s expanding housing stock.

During a visit to the sub-city on Monday, Sandhu inspected DDA’s ready-to-move-in flats in Pocket 11 and Sectors A1-A4. He said stronger police presence was needed to address criminal and drug-related activities in the area, while stressing that housing projects must be accompanied by adequate security, essential public facilities and well-maintained public spaces.

The direction places police infrastructure within the planning of Narela’s residential expansion. Instead of treating security facilities as a later operational requirement, the Lieutenant Governor asked the DDA to identify and provide built-up spaces for police stations, chowkis and beats. The source report did not specify the number, size or delivery timeline of the proposed facilities.

Sandhu also reviewed the work being carried out by several government agencies responsible for services in and around the housing projects. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi is handling sanitation and other civic services, the Delhi Jal Board is responsible for water supply and sewerage, Delhi Police is responsible for security, and the Transport Department is overseeing DTC connectivity.

He said the provision of necessary services to residents could not be delayed and that he would continue monitoring the rollout of infrastructure in Narela. The review is significant for DDA housing schemes in the area, where the speed of flat sales has increased the need to match homes with operational public services.

Sandhu said several housing schemes, including the Shramjeevi and Karmajeevi Awas Yojana, had recorded brisk sales, with flats being sold within hours of registration opening. He also referred to DDA discounts intended to make the flats more affordable. The administration’s stated focus is now on ensuring that purchasers receive civic amenities and security along with their homes.

The visit also covered Narela’s planned education and land-pooling developments. Sandhu inspected land allotted to state universities in Sectors G7 and G8 for an integrated Education Hub and reviewed Sector 8B in Zone P-II, where 70 per cent contiguous pooled land has been achieved under the Land Pooling Policy. The sector is the first to reach that milestone, according to the report.

The proposed Education Hub covers 138 hectares under the Master Plan for Delhi 2047. It is planned to include higher education, research, innovation, vocational training and employment-generation facilities. Sandhu asked agencies to expedite its development as part of efforts to establish Narela as an education destination. The next steps include continued monitoring of civic service rollout, provision of spaces for policing facilities and progress on the Education Hub and land-pooling works.
