Mumbai’s expanding metro network is set to receive a major pedestrian infrastructure upgrade, with seven new foot over bridges planned along the Metro Line 9 corridor connecting Dahisar East and Mira-Bhayandar. The initiative aims to improve safe access to stations, reduce conflict between pedestrians and high-speed traffic, and strengthen last-mile connectivity across one of the region’s fastest-growing urban corridors. The proposed bridges will be developed at key locations along the Metro Line 9 route, including major traffic junctions and commercial stretches where daily pedestrian movement remains high. Urban transport planners view the project as an important step towards creating a more people-centric mobility system, particularly in suburban areas where transport infrastructure has historically prioritised vehicles over walkers.

The new Pedestrian Bridges are expected to serve areas along the Western Express Highway and the Mira-Bhayandar Road, two corridors that carry significant traffic volumes throughout the day. These roads have witnessed increasing commuter activity as residential development, commercial growth and transport investments continue to reshape the northern edge of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Mobility experts note that safe station access is often overlooked in large transit projects despite being critical to ridership growth. While metro systems can dramatically improve travel times, inadequate pedestrian infrastructure can discourage usage, particularly among senior citizens, women, children and persons with disabilities. By providing grade-separated crossings, authorities aim to reduce risks associated with crossing multi-lane roads and improve overall commuter experience. The Pedestrian Bridges are planned with accessibility features including lifts, stairways and surveillance systems. Such facilities are increasingly becoming standard requirements in modern transport infrastructure as cities seek to make public mobility more inclusive and universally accessible.

Urban development specialists argue that investments in pedestrian infrastructure generate benefits beyond safety. Well-designed walking connections encourage greater use of public transport, reduce dependence on short vehicle trips and contribute to lower transport-related emissions. In densely populated metropolitan regions, pedestrian-friendly infrastructure also supports healthier and more sustainable travel behaviour. The project comes as Metro Line 9 moves closer to full operational readiness. As an extension of Mumbai’s growing metro network, the corridor is expected to improve connectivity between established suburban neighbourhoods and emerging residential zones in Mira-Bhayandar. Efficient station access will play a crucial role in determining how effectively the corridor serves daily commuters. Transport analysts further highlight that integrating walking infrastructure with mass transit can help create a more balanced urban mobility ecosystem. Rather than viewing footpaths, bridges and transit stations as separate assets, successful cities increasingly treat them as interconnected components of a single transport network.

As construction progresses, the effectiveness of the project will ultimately be measured by how comfortably and safely people can reach metro stations. For a region experiencing rapid urbanisation, investments in pedestrian infrastructure may prove as important as the transit systems they are designed to support.
