The Mumbai Coastal Road North project has moved into a new construction phase with an advanced casting yard established in Bhayandar to manufacture precast concrete elements for the Versova-Dahisar-Bhayandar corridor, a major road link intended to improve travel between Mumbai and Bhayandar. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has set a target of completing the project by December 2028, according to a report by Loksatta – Mumbai.
The wider Mumbai Coastal Road North project is planned as an approximately 60-kilometre infrastructure network, including interchanges and connecting roads. It is designed to link Versova and Bhayandar through the coastal road system and address traffic congestion in the Mumbai metropolitan region.
The project follows the completion of the southern coastal road link between Marine Drive and Worli. The municipal corporation is now focusing on the northern extension connecting Versova, Dahisar and Bhayandar. The works have been divided into seven packages, identified as packages A, B, C, D, E, F and the Dahisar-Bhayandar connecting road.
The Bhayandar casting yard will produce different types of precast structural components required for the project. Manufacturing these elements at a dedicated facility is intended to support the construction process as work advances across the project packages. The source report did not provide the yard’s production capacity, total area, investment value or the specific components scheduled for manufacture.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar visited the casting-yard site and inspected the ongoing work, according to the report. His site visit comes as the civic body seeks to accelerate construction of the northern coastal road project and coordinate work across its multiple sections.
The corridor’s stated purpose is to provide a direct travel connection from Mumbai towards Bhayandar while helping address congestion on existing routes. However, the report does not specify the expected reduction in travel time, the road’s detailed alignment, the number of lanes, the estimated project cost or the status of land, environmental and other approvals.
The December 2028 completion target remains the project’s key announced milestone. Further updates will depend on progress across the seven construction packages and the production and deployment of precast elements from the Bhayandar facility.
