Mumbai Footpath Trees Get Scientific Protection Plan
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is preparing a science-led management framework for the city’s Footpath Trees after hundreds of tree fall incidents during the ongoing monsoon highlighted growing concerns over public safety and ageing urban green infrastructure. The initiative aims to balance pedestrian protection with long-term tree conservation, reflecting a broader shift towards climate-resilient urban forestry in India’s financial capital. The civic administration is developing a three-pronged strategy that combines scientific assessment, engineering coordination and ecological management for trees growing along pavements and busy roads. These roadside trees perform an essential environmental function by reducing urban heat, improving air quality and providing shade, yet they also present significant risks during periods of intense rainfall and strong winds if their structural health deteriorates.
Municipal data indicates that Mumbai has nearly 2.87 million trees, with approximately two lakh classified as Footpath Trees situated adjacent to roads, pedestrian corridors and public utilities. Since the onset of the current monsoon, more than 800 tree fall incidents have been recorded across the city, reinforcing the need for a more systematic approach to monitoring tree stability rather than relying primarily on seasonal pruning. Officials are expected to involve academic institutions and technical experts to strengthen scientific evaluation of tree health, root systems and soil conditions. Urban forestry specialists believe that species-specific assessments, regular structural audits and improved risk mapping can help distinguish trees requiring conservation treatment from those posing genuine public safety concerns. Another key component of the strategy focuses on underground infrastructure. In dense urban environments, tree roots frequently encounter water pipelines, drainage systems, utility cables and other buried services. Such conflicts can restrict natural root growth, weaken anchorage and reduce a tree’s resilience during heavy storms. Coordinated planning between utility agencies and arboriculture experts could therefore minimise damage to both infrastructure and vegetation.
The civic body’s proposals also include improving the soil environment surrounding roadside trees to enhance water infiltration and moisture retention. Healthy soil supports stronger root development, making trees better equipped to withstand prolonged rainfall, drought cycles and increasingly erratic weather associated with climate change. Environmental planners note that preserving mature trees is often more effective for urban climate adaptation than replacing them after failure. Before the onset of the southwest monsoon, municipal teams had completed pruning operations for around half of the city’s roadside trees as part of routine preparedness measures. However, recent weather events have demonstrated that pruning alone cannot fully address risks arising from ageing trees, constrained root systems or changing rainfall patterns. Urban planners increasingly argue that cities require comprehensive urban forest management strategies that integrate biodiversity conservation with public safety and infrastructure planning. As Mumbai continues to experience more frequent extreme weather events, strengthening the resilience of Footpath Trees through evidence-based management could reduce hazards while preserving one of the city’s most valuable natural assets.
The effectiveness of the programme will ultimately depend on sustained monitoring, transparent scientific evaluation and coordinated maintenance that protects both residents and the urban tree canopy, ensuring greener and more climate-resilient public spaces for the future.
