Data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) shows that water storage across Mumbai’s seven reservoirs increased sharply within a single day following widespread rainfall over the upper catchments. The combined storage now stands at nearly 29 per cent of total capacity, representing one of the most substantial daily gains recorded since the onset of the southwest monsoon.
Despite the rapid improvement in Reservoir Levels, municipal officials have opted against immediately restoring normal water supply. The city has been operating under a 10 per cent water cut since mid-May after delayed monsoon inflows reduced available reserves. Daily supply currently remains below the city’s usual distribution levels as authorities seek to balance present demand with long-term water security. Urban water planners note that reservoir management depends not only on current storage but also on rainfall consistency throughout the monsoon season. While a sharp increase in inflows provides immediate relief, future weather patterns remain a critical factor in determining whether conservation measures can safely be withdrawn without risking shortages later in the year. Among the seven reservoirs, Vihar Lake is approaching full capacity and is expected to overflow if heavy rainfall continues over the coming days. Overflow from the reservoir requires close monitoring because additional discharge contributes to water movement through the Mithi River system, where downstream drainage capacity becomes particularly important during periods of intense rainfall. Coordinated management between reservoir operations and flood-control authorities therefore remains essential.
