MSEDCL Detects 2,285 Power Theft Cases Across Mumbai Region

MSEDCL has detected 2,285 electricity theft cases involving 3.76 million units of power across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region since April 2026, with the cases valued at Rs 10 crore, according to figures reported by the utility. The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited has recovered Rs 7 crore from 1,494 consumers so far.

The detected cases cover three MSEDCL divisions in the region: Thane, Vashi and Pen. The Vashi division recorded the highest number of cases, with 771 instances involving electricity valued at Rs 4.87 crore. Pen division reported 1,079 cases valued at Rs 3.39 crore, while Thane division detected 435 cases involving Rs 1.8 crore worth of electricity.

The figures indicate that the largest number of cases was recorded in Pen division, while Vashi accounted for the highest value of electricity allegedly stolen among the three divisions. Together, the cases represent a significant enforcement burden for the distribution utility, which must assess the suspected theft, recover dues and initiate legal action where required.

MSEDCL has registered first information reports against 185 consumers in connection with the cases. Legal proceedings are under way against the remaining offenders, according to the report. The recovery of Rs 7 crore from 1,494 consumers means that the utility has recovered a substantial portion of the total assessed value, although Rs 3 crore remains unrecovered based on the figures reported.

Electricity theft can involve unauthorised connections, tampering with meters or other forms of illegal abstraction, although the supplied report does not specify the methods allegedly used in these cases. The reported figures also do not provide a breakdown of the cases by residential, commercial, industrial or other consumer categories.

The geographic spread across Thane, Vashi and Pen places the enforcement activity within the wider electricity network serving the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The cases are being handled through both financial recovery and criminal proceedings, with FIRs registered in the most serious or legally actionable instances identified by the utility.

MSEDCL’s reported action comes as distribution utilities continue to rely on inspections, assessment of unauthorised consumption and legal recovery to address losses in their networks. The figures released in this case cover detections made from April 2026 onwards, but the supplied report does not state the number of inspections conducted, the duration of the enforcement campaign or the utility’s target for further recoveries.

The remaining proceedings and recovery efforts will determine how much of the assessed Rs 10 crore is ultimately collected. Legal action against the 185 consumers named in FIRs and proceedings involving the other detected cases remain under way.
