Mumbai Social Worker Attacked With Sickles; One Arrested

A social worker was attacked with sickles outside his office in Malwani early Monday, prompting police to register an attempted murder case against four people and arrest one suspect, according to Malwani Police. The incident occurred around 2.30am near Gate No. 8, where the victim, Nadeem Shaikh, resides.

Police said Shaikh had been threatened by the group after raising his voice against a history-sheeter identified as Sajid. A police officer said investigators had identified three of the alleged attackers, while the identity of one person remained unknown. The case has been registered under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Shaikh suffered severe injuries during the attack. A video clip circulated after the incident showed him bleeding heavily, with injuries to his arms, chin and neck. He was also stabbed in the chest, according to the report. Shaikh was taken to Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital in an autorickshaw, where he is receiving treatment.

The attack reportedly took place after Shaikh left his office. His acquaintance, Kabir, said Shaikh had met him at the office and that they had remained together until early Monday. According to Kabir, Shaikh then left for home, while a group of men allegedly waiting behind vehicles attacked him near the residential area.

Shaikh was also reported to have identified two of the four alleged attackers as Shoeb and Mehtaab in the video clip. He said he would be able to identify the attackers if they were brought before him. These identifications form part of the material being examined by the police as the investigation continues.

The case places a focus on safety in Malwani’s residential neighbourhoods and on the protection available to people who publicly raise allegations about criminal activity. The police have not disclosed further details about the arrested suspect, the specific sections applied beyond the attempted murder case, or the next investigation steps in the material available for this report.

Malwani Police said they had identified three suspects and were continuing efforts to establish the identity of the remaining alleged attacker. Shaikh remains under treatment at Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital.
