Maharashtra is considering a broader public charging network for electric vehicles, with government-owned transport facilities and selected flyovers emerging as potential locations. Charging points are being planned at Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation depots and Regional Transport Offices, while authorities are examining public-private partnerships for installations on flyovers managed by state infrastructure agencies. The proposed Maharashtra EV charging network would use locations that already have strong transport activity, potentially reducing the need to acquire separate land for charging infrastructure. MSRTC depots and RTO premises could provide strategically placed sites for motorists, commercial operators and public transport fleets as electric vehicle adoption increases.
The proposal was discussed at an event in Mumbai where electric commercial vehicles were showcased at a regional transport facility. The transport department is also examining whether flyovers under agencies such as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation and the Public Works Department could accommodate charging facilities. Using existing public infrastructure could offer a practical route to expanding the Maharashtra EV charging network. Land availability is a recurring constraint in dense urban areas, particularly where demand for parking, public transport infrastructure and commercial activity competes for limited space. Existing government sites could therefore provide locations without creating an entirely new land footprint. The potential use of flyovers requires more detailed planning. Charging facilities need sufficient electrical capacity, safe vehicle access, appropriate circulation space and protection from traffic conflicts. Structural loading, fire safety, maintenance access and pedestrian movement would also need to be considered before individual sites are approved.
The economics of a public-private partnership will be equally important. Private operators can bring investment and charging technology, while public agencies can provide access to strategically located land. However, transparent agreements on tariffs, maintenance standards, uptime and access will be necessary if the network is to serve more than high-value commercial users. For Maharashtra’s transport system, the opportunity extends beyond private cars. Electric buses, trucks, taxis and other commercial vehicles require dependable charging at locations suited to their operating patterns. Depot-based infrastructure could be particularly relevant for public transport fleets, where vehicles return to a known location and can be charged during scheduled periods. Urban planners also point to the wider environmental value of improving charging availability. A stronger network can reduce one of the practical barriers to switching from internal-combustion vehicles to electric alternatives. The climate benefit, however, depends on electricity sources, vehicle utilisation and the overall efficiency of the transport system.
The proposal remains at the planning stage, and its impact will depend on how quickly suitable locations are identified and projects are implemented. Maharashtra will need to combine charging expansion with grid upgrades, clear operating standards and equitable access if public infrastructure is to support a broad-based transition to cleaner mobility.
