Indore is set to make a landmark leap in its urban transit infrastructure as it prepares to roll out Madhya Pradesh’s first metro rail system. With safety approvals secured and trial operations successfully completed, the city is now on the cusp of a long-anticipated mobility transformation.
The initial operations are planned along a 5.9-kilometre Super Priority Corridor that will run from Gandhi Nagar Depot to Station No. 3, marking a significant beginning for what is poised to become a far-reaching mass transit network in the region. The project, when fully realised, will span 28 stations and interlink key city zones, significantly reducing traffic congestion and carbon emissions. Trains will run at half-hour intervals from 8 AM to 8 PM daily, covering 50 round trips in both directions. In a strategic move aimed at encouraging early ridership and promoting behavioural change towards public transport, the government has announced that commuters will enjoy fare-free travel for the first week. This will be followed by a series of subsidised fare slabs: a 70 percent discount in the second week, 50 percent in the third, and a 25 percent concession over the following three months before regular fares are implemented. Full ticket prices are expected to range from ₹20 to ₹80, with value-based pricing to support affordability across income groups.
The five stations along the initial route have been designed with an eye on accessibility and convenience. Each station is equipped with lifts, escalators, and e-bus connectivity, reinforcing a multimodal transport ecosystem. This is particularly crucial for a city like Indore, which has long relied on informal transit systems and congested roadways to meet its daily mobility needs. The metro’s emphasis on clean energy operations and last-mile connectivity solutions places it firmly within the larger national goal of transitioning towards sustainable and carbon-neutral urban centres.
The metro is expected to be flagged off by the Prime Minister, underscoring its national importance and the government’s commitment to improving public infrastructure in Tier-2 cities. As urbanisation intensifies, Indore’s metro is seen not just as a symbol of infrastructural growth but also as a test case for scalable transit solutions that can be replicated in other emerging urban hubs across India. With Bhopal also slated to launch its metro network by mid-2025, Madhya Pradesh is actively scripting a new narrative in regional transportation.
