Kolkata is preparing for a major shift in urban mobility as the state government moves to introduce a Water Metro network while aligning with the Centre’s Sagarmala 2 maritime development programme. The initiative is expected to strengthen river-based public transport, modernise waterfront infrastructure and improve regional connectivity, offering an alternative to increasingly congested road corridors across the metropolitan region.
The proposed Water Metro network forms part of a broader package of maritime infrastructure investments being planned over the coming years. Government officials indicated that project proposals covering coastal infrastructure, inland waterways, fishing facilities and island development are under preparation, reflecting a renewed emphasis on integrating waterways into the state’s transport and economic planning.Urban planners have long argued that Kolkata’s extensive river system remains an underutilised transport asset despite the Hooghly River playing a historic role in the city’s growth.
