India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper service is set to connect Guwahati with Kolkata, marking a significant shift in long-distance rail connectivity between the Northeast and eastern India. The upcoming overnight corridor is expected to strengthen passenger mobility, improve regional economic integration and provide an alternative to road and air travel, while supporting more efficient movement across one of the country’s strategically important transport corridors.
The introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper service represents an expansion of India’s semi-high-speed rail programme beyond daytime operations. Unlike the existing chair-car variants, the sleeper configuration is designed for overnight journeys, enabling travellers to cover longer distances with reduced travel fatigue. Railway authorities have confirmed that the train has completed testing and certification ahead of commercial operations on the Guwahati-Howrah corridor.For the Northeast, improved rail connectivity carries wider economic significance than passenger convenience alone.
