Kolkata Roads Face Urgent Repairs As Rains Intensify
A citywide road-repair exercise is being lined up ahead of Durga Puja after persistent monsoon rain worsened potholes and damaged key stretches across Kolkata. The state’s urban affairs administration has set 10 October as the target for restoring roads in particularly poor condition, placing pressure on civic agencies to complete urgent work while weather conditions remain challenging.
The immediate concern is not limited to the appearance of damaged carriageways. Potholes, uneven surfaces and water-filled depressions can slow buses, increase risks for two-wheeler riders and make walking more difficult. Recent road damage has been reported along important corridors including the EM Bypass, parts of Dum Dum, Garia, Salt Lake and routes towards the airport.Officials are planning the repairs in stages rather than treating every damaged stretch with a single surface treatment. Work on underlying layers is expected to begin first, while the final bituminous surface is to be completed once the monsoon eases. The approach reflects a basic engineering constraint: laying the upper road surface effectively becomes harder when prolonged rainfall leaves the underlying layers wet.
For Kolkata, the timing is significant because the city enters one of its busiest periods during the festive season. Roads around markets, residential neighbourhoods, transport hubs and major Puja destinations experience sharp increases in pedestrian and vehicle movement. Any unfinished work could therefore translate into congestion, slower emergency access and additional pressure on public transport.The more persistent issue, however, is how roads perform through successive monsoons. Excess water can penetrate cracks and weaken the layers beneath the surface, while traffic repeatedly stresses already-damaged sections. Urban infrastructure specialists point to drainage as a critical part of road durability, since removing standing water can reduce the pace at which pavement deteriorates.Recent civic action elsewhere in the metropolitan region illustrates the scale of the maintenance challenge. Kolkata Municipal Corporation has been carrying out emergency patchwork on several arterial roads after rainfall exposed potholes, while road authorities have also used mobile repair teams for quicker interventions. Traffic police have separately flagged damaged stretches requiring attention, including parts of the EM Bypass and roads in Jadavpur, Behala and Tollygunge.
For residents, the test of the Kolkata road repairs programme will ultimately be durability rather than the speed of the pre-Puja makeover. Completing the immediate works before October can ease mobility during the festival, but longer-term gains will depend on better drainage, stronger construction standards and maintenance systems capable of responding before small defects become major failures.
