Kolkata Rail Capacity Upgrade Targets Faster Freight Movement
Rail infrastructure serving the Kolkata metropolitan region is set for a significant capacity upgrade after Indian Railways cleared a ₹440 crore investment to build an additional railway line between Nimpura West Outer Cabin and Midnapur. Although the project is located in West Bengal’s Paschim Medinipur district, it is expected to improve the efficiency of rail operations feeding into Kolkata, easing congestion across one of eastern India’s busiest transport corridors.
The Kolkata rail capacity enhancement centres on constructing a 14.52-kilometre third line along a high-utilisation section of South Eastern Railway. The corridor handles both long-distance passenger services and heavy freight traffic connecting industrial clusters, ports and urban markets across eastern India. Railway authorities say the additional track will improve operational flexibility by reducing bottlenecks that currently limit train movement on the route.For Kolkata and its surrounding urban economy, the investment carries implications beyond railway operations. The city depends on uninterrupted rail connectivity for the movement of raw materials, manufactured goods and agricultural produce arriving from western and southern regions. Urban transport experts note that increasing line capacity can improve scheduling reliability, minimise delays and strengthen supply chains supporting manufacturing, logistics and wholesale markets across the metropolitan region.The route already accommodates substantial freight volumes, including coal, iron ore, steel, cement, fertilisers, petroleum products, food grains and container traffic. Officials estimate the project will create capacity for an additional 3.52 million tonnes of freight annually while supporting smoother operations on a corridor that currently handles nearly 23.8 million tonnes each year.

Higher rail capacity enables a greater share of freight to move by rail instead of road, helping reduce highway congestion, fuel consumption and transport-related emissions.
