Kolkata’s long-delayed Baranagar–Barrackpore Metro corridor has cleared a major civic hurdle, with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation issuing the clearance needed for work along the BT Road alignment. The 12.3-km corridor, planned as part of the city’s Pink Line, could strengthen public transport across Kolkata’s northern suburbs, but its delivery will now depend on careful utility relocation and coordinated construction.
The immediate obstacle has been underground water infrastructure running along BT Road. The corridor cannot proceed normally without resolving conflicts between the proposed Metro structures and existing transmission pipelines that are critical to Kolkata’s water network. Under the latest arrangement, existing 48-inch pipelines are to be closed while larger 72-inch pipelines are constructed to maintain supply capacity.The issue illustrates a wider challenge facing Kolkata Metro expansion: urban infrastructure rarely operates in isolation. Transport projects must share limited road space with water, drainage, electricity and other essential networks. Moving one system without protecting another can create risks for residents far beyond the construction zone.The Baranagar–Barrackpore section was originally agreed more than a decade ago, but disagreements over pipeline relocation and statutory approvals kept the project from progressing. Government records earlier this year identified the 12.5-km stretch between Baranagar and Barrackpore as being held up by utility shifting.
The completed Baranagar–Dakshineshwar section, meanwhile, already provides part of the wider corridor.The renewed push comes as procurement has also moved forward. A tender has been floated for roughly 12.3 km of viaduct and 10 elevated stations between Baranagar and the proposed Mangal Pandey terminal, with an estimated value of about ₹1,587 crore.For citizens, the significance extends beyond shorter journeys. BT Road is a major north Kolkata transport artery, and better mass-transit capacity could reduce dependence on road-based travel while improving access to jobs, education and services in the northern suburbs. Urban planners also point to the potential for more efficient development around stations, provided pedestrian access, road safety and last-mile connectivity are planned alongside the Metro.
The latest clearance therefore marks progress, not completion. The next test will be whether utility replacement, construction and traffic management can proceed without disrupting Kolkata’s essential water supply or imposing avoidable costs on neighbourhoods. A successful Kolkata Metro expansion will ultimately be measured not only by kilometres of viaduct built, but by how reliably and inclusively the network serves the city.
