Kolkata Green Tug Project Strengthens Port Modernisation
A proposed electric harbour tug for Kolkata has added momentum to India’s transition towards cleaner port infrastructure, after Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) received a Letter of Intent for constructing a 15-tonne bollard pull electric tug valued at ₹37.94 crore. The development marks another step in reducing emissions from port operations while reinforcing the role of indigenous shipbuilding in modernising maritime logistics.
The vessel is expected to support towing and manoeuvring operations within the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, replacing or complementing conventional diesel-powered harbour craft. Although a Letter of Intent is subject to completion of contractual formalities, the project reflects a wider policy direction towards electrification of port equipment and cleaner maritime transport. Industry observers note that ports account for a significant share of local air pollution, making low-emission vessels an increasingly important component of urban sustainability strategies.The electric harbour tug represents more than a commercial order.
