Kolkata is likely to see another spell of rain from Wednesday as a cyclonic circulation over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas strengthens the monsoon flow, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The IMD bulletin issued on Tuesday said the upper-air cyclonic circulation is positioned over the northwest Bay of Bengal, north Odisha and the West Bengal coast, with its alignment tilting southwestwards. The system is expected to descend and support the formation of rain clouds over the region.
The forecast comes after Kolkata experienced two almost-dry days. H R Biswas, head of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata, said most parts of south Bengal could receive enhanced rainfall during the next spell, while the city was likely to get light to moderate rain.
“We expect to enter another wet spell with enhanced rain in most parts of south Bengal. While western parts of the state are likely to get more rain, there would be light to moderate rain in Kolkata,” Biswas said, according to the report.
Western parts of West Bengal are expected to receive more rain than Kolkata under the current system. The renewed rainfall could again affect road movement and outdoor activity in the city, although the supplied forecast does not specify any warning level or disruption advisory for Kolkata.
The changing weather comes as the southwest monsoon may begin withdrawing from parts of Rajasthan around Saturday, according to the IMD bulletin. This indicates that withdrawal may begin in some parts of the country even as a fresh rain-producing system remains active over eastern India.
Kolkata’s maximum temperature rose slightly above normal during the past two days after remaining below or near normal for four days. The temperature reached 33.7°C, which was 0.9 degrees Celsius above normal. The IMD’s next forecast updates will establish the intensity and spread of rainfall across Kolkata and south Bengal.
