Kolkata is likely to see mostly dry weather over the next few days, while North Bengal faces continued rain and a risk of heavy to very heavy showers, according to the Alipore weather office. Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar have been placed under an orange alert for Wednesday, when intense rainfall and strong winds are expected.
The forecast follows a low-pressure area that formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and has moved west-northwest towards the Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts. An associated cyclonic circulation remains at about 7.6 kilometres above sea level, while a trough extending from Rajasthan to the circulation passes over Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
The active monsoon trough is expected to keep weather conditions unsettled across North Bengal. Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong and Cooch Behar are likely to receive rain from Monday through Thursday, with heavy showers possible in some locations. Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar are expected to be the worst affected on Wednesday, prompting the orange alert.
North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur and Malda are not currently expected to receive heavy rainfall. However, the weather office has warned of thunderstorms and gusty winds in these districts, indicating that hazardous conditions may continue even without intense rain.
In South Bengal, isolated thunderstorms and light to moderate rain are likely on Monday in Purulia, Bankura, Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman, Birbhum and Murshidabad. Wind speeds in these districts may reach 30 to 40 kilometres per hour. Elsewhere in the region, including Kolkata, the weather is expected to remain largely dry over the next few days, although one or two brief spells of scattered rain cannot be ruled out.
The forecast marks a regional split in weather conditions, with the city and most of South Bengal moving towards a relatively drier phase while North Bengal remains exposed to rain-related disruption. The warning is relevant to road users, local administrations and residents in vulnerable areas because thunderstorms, gusty winds and intense rain can affect visibility, drainage and local mobility.
Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 25.2 degrees Celsius on Monday morning, 1.2 degrees below normal. The city’s maximum temperature on Sunday was 31.6 degrees Celsius, also 1.2 degrees below normal. The Alipore weather office’s current forecast covers conditions through Thursday, with the orange alert for Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar scheduled for Wednesday.
