Indian Railways has announced the installation of over 2,249 solar power plants across railway stations and service buildings nationwide, aiming for completion by February 2025.

This ambitious initiative is part of the railway’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting renewable energy, reflecting a broader national agenda to transition towards greener energy solutions. In the past five years alone, Indian Railways has commissioned 1,489 solar units more than double the 628 units installed during the previous five-year period. Rajasthan leads the charge with the highest number of installations, accounting for 275 solar units. Most solar installations are facilitated through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) under the developer mode, encouraging private sector participation. Despite the progress, the transition to solar energy has not been without challenges. Regulatory hurdles, issues related to power evacuation, and grid connectivity have posed significant obstacles.
