Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) recorded its highest average daily gas sales to date in the second quarter of FY 2026-27, but the urban gas distributor also reported a sharp fall in quarterly profit despite higher sales volumes and turnover.
According to the company’s unaudited results announced on Friday, IGL’s average daily gas sales rose to 10.06 million standard cubic metres per day (mmscmd) during the July-September quarter. This was an 8 per cent increase from 9.31 mmscmd in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year.
The growth was reported across both of IGL’s main sales segments. Compressed natural gas (CNG) sales volume increased by 9 per cent during the quarter, while piped natural gas (PNG) sales grew by 8 per cent. CNG serves the company’s vehicle-fuel business, while PNG forms part of its piped gas distribution operations.
The increase in gas volumes was accompanied by a rise in gross sales turnover. IGL reported turnover of Rs 5,999.13 crore for the quarter, up 26 per cent from Rs 4,431.63 crore in the second quarter of FY 2025-26.
However, the higher sales did not translate into a corresponding improvement in the company’s bottom line. IGL’s profit after tax fell to Rs 24.38 crore in the quarter, compared with Rs 372.51 crore in the same period last year. The year-on-year decline was about 93 per cent.
The contrasting figures place IGL’s latest results in the context of a gas distribution business that expanded its reported volumes while recording substantially lower profitability. The results provide separate measures of operational activity and financial performance: average daily sales and segment volumes increased, turnover rose, but profit after tax declined sharply.
IGL’s CNG and PNG businesses are connected to two everyday urban systems: road-based mobility and household or other piped-gas consumption. The latest figures show that demand recorded by the company increased in both segments during the quarter. They do not, however, provide a breakdown in the supplied results of the factors behind the fall in profit after tax.
The company reported the results as unaudited financial results for the July-September period. The disclosed figures cover the second quarter of FY 2026-27 and compare performance with the corresponding quarter of FY 2025-26. No further explanation for the sharp decline in profit was provided in the supplied report.
IGL’s latest quarterly performance therefore presents a mixed picture: record average daily gas sales and growth in both CNG and PNG volumes alongside a steep reduction in profit after tax. The company has reported the results for the quarter, with the unaudited figures forming the immediate basis for the comparison.
