Ahmedabad Metro Gets Airport, GIFT City Expansion Push

Ahmedabad Metro’s expansion to the city’s international airport and deeper into GIFT City moved forward on Friday, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed the foundation-stone ceremony for two projects with a combined estimated cost of ₹2,700 crore. The extensions are planned to improve access to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and connect GIFT City’s financial and residential areas more directly to the metro network, Divya Bhaskar reported.

The airport project, identified as Phase 2A, will run for 6 kilometres from Koteshwar Road to Ahmedabad airport at an estimated cost of ₹1,800 crore. The corridor will have five stations, including four elevated stations and one underground station inside the airport premises.

The section from Koteshwar Road through Hansol to Taj Circle is planned as an elevated corridor. From Taj Circle towards the airport, the metro will move underground. The proposed airport station is expected to provide access to the terminal through lifts and escalators, creating a direct interchange between metro travel and air travel.

The second project, Phase 2B, will extend the metro 3.3 kilometres into the internal areas of GIFT City. The route, estimated to cost ₹900 crore, will connect GIFT City with Shahpur and will be entirely elevated. Three new metro stations are planned along the extension.

Metro services have already reached the main entrance of GIFT City. The new internal extension is intended to serve the commercial financial hub, residential societies and institutions located within the planned business district. According to the report, the corridor is expected to provide a transport option for employees, students and daily commuters working or studying in the area.

The two projects expand the role of the Ahmedabad Metro beyond existing city and suburban connections. The airport extension addresses a direct link to a major regional gateway, while the GIFT City extension focuses on last-mile access within a specialised business and residential district. Together, they are being positioned as part of the broader transport infrastructure supporting the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar twin-city region.

The project details released in the report do not specify construction deadlines, opening dates, financing arrangements beyond the estimated costs, or the expected frequency of services. The next milestones will depend on the implementation of the two corridors and the construction of their planned stations.
