Hyderabad: Hyderabad is preparing for a significant transformation in urban mobility with a series of proposals aimed at making daily travel safer, more connected and less dependent on private vehicles. The plans focus on improving public transport integration, expanding walking and cycling infrastructure, and using technology to manage traffic more efficiently across the metropolitan region.
The proposals, discussed by dedicated working groups under the Hyderabad Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (HUMTA), outline a long-term strategy to improve connectivity while supporting sustainable urban growth. Rather than treating individual transport modes separately, the approach seeks to create an integrated network where metro rail, suburban trains, buses, cycling and walking function as a single mobility system. Officials are also examining transport planning measures such as Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), non-motorised transport policies, traffic impact assessments and improved parking management. Proposed skywalks at busy junctions, redevelopment of spaces beneath flyovers and organised street vending zones are intended to improve both mobility and public space management. Urban planners note that well-designed pedestrian infrastructure not only enhances road safety but also supports local businesses by creating more accessible streets. Technology is expected to play an increasingly important role in the city’s transport network. Intelligent traffic management platforms and traffic simulation studies are being considered to improve traffic flow, reduce delays and enable faster responses to congestion. Data-driven traffic systems can also help authorities optimise signal timings and plan future infrastructure investments more effectively.
