New Delhi: A renewed phase of intense monsoon activity is expected to affect large parts of India on Thursday, with the national weather agency forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across several northern, central, western, eastern and southern states. The latest Heavy Rain Alert has particular significance for urban centres, where persistent downpours could disrupt transport networks, strain drainage systems and test civic preparedness during the peak monsoon season.
Weather officials have indicated that a deep depression over eastern India is moving westwards, creating favourable conditions for widespread rainfall over multiple regions. Alongside heavy showers, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are expected across several states, increasing the likelihood of localised flooding, waterlogging and temporary interruptions to road and rail movement. For Delhi-NCR, forecasts point towards another spell of heavy rainfall extending over the coming days. The region has already witnessed recurring monsoon-related challenges this season, including traffic congestion, inundated low-lying areas and pressure on stormwater infrastructure. Urban planners note that such weather events increasingly highlight the need for resilient drainage systems, better flood management and climate-responsive city planning as rainfall patterns become more erratic. The Heavy Rain Alert extends to parts of southern India as well, including Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, where strong thunderstorms may accompany persistent rainfall. Experts emphasise that rapidly growing cities must increasingly integrate weather resilience into infrastructure planning, particularly through improved stormwater management, early warning systems and nature-based flood mitigation. With active monsoon conditions expected to continue, civic agencies across affected states are likely to remain on heightened readiness.
