Hyderabad Thoothukudi Faces Water Shortage Ahead of 24x7 Plan
Thoothukudi is facing drinking water disruptions across several neighbourhoods after damage to a major supply pipeline compounded concerns over falling water levels in the Thamirabarani river. The disruption comes just days before the corporation plans to begin 24-hour water supply, highlighting the pressure on the city’s water infrastructure and source availability.
Residents in Rajiv Nagar, SBM Nagar, Annai Teresa Nagar, Palpandi Nagar, P&T Colony, Kovilpillai Vilai, parts of Muthammal Colony and Trespuram have reported shortages. The affected areas depend on water brought through the fourth pipeline scheme from the Thamirabarani river at Kaliyavoor near Vallanadu, around 40 km from Thoothukudi. Regular supply was interrupted from August 6 after water levels at the source declined. Residents have also reported uneven distribution, with households located close to overhead tanks receiving relatively better access than those farther away. An inspection by the municipal administration found leakage along the main pipeline near the Kaliyavoor pumping station. Officials identified cracks in sections of the conduit as well as other damage that had resulted in significant water loss. The reported leaks have since been addressed.
The episode exposes two linked vulnerabilities in the city’s water system. The first is the condition of ageing distribution infrastructure. The second is dependence on a river source whose availability is being affected by declining water levels. The municipal administration has indicated that weak and ageing sections of the pipeline will be replaced. Until regular supply is restored, tankers are expected to provide drinking water to affected households. The corporation is also working to increase the water level available at the Kaliyavoor pumping station. Officials expect this intervention, combined with pipeline repairs, to help stabilise supply across the city’s wards.
The timing adds another layer of concern. Thoothukudi is preparing to introduce 24×7 water supply from August 15. A continuous supply model requires not only adequate water at the source but also dependable pipelines, pumping systems, storage and distribution networks. Any weakness in one part of that chain can affect the reliability of the entire system. The situation also highlights the importance of managing demand alongside infrastructure investment. With river levels under pressure, reducing avoidable consumption can help extend available supplies. Water conservation becomes particularly important when cities depend on distant sources and ageing transmission networks. For Thoothukudi, the immediate priority is restoring dependable drinking water to affected neighbourhoods. Over the longer term, replacing vulnerable pipelines, reducing transmission losses and strengthening source resilience will be essential if the city is to sustain round-the-clock supply.
