Hyderabad’s lake network is set to receive greater attention as the Telangana government seeks corporate participation in restoring and maintaining water bodies through corporate social responsibility funding. The initiative aims to strengthen the city’s flood-management capacity while protecting natural water systems that are increasingly important as urbanisation expands.
The appeal was made during a CSR-focused round table convened by the state’s municipal administration and urban development authorities. Government representatives urged companies to direct part of their CSR spending towards lake restoration, particularly in smaller water bodies that may receive less attention under large infrastructure programmes. Hyderabad’s lakes perform several functions within the urban landscape. They provide temporary storage for stormwater during intense rainfall, help moderate local flooding and contribute to groundwater recharge. They can also support biodiversity and provide open spaces within densely developed neighbourhoods. The condition of these water bodies has become increasingly relevant as the city experiences rapid construction and changes in land use. Reduced natural drainage areas can increase runoff during heavy rainfall, placing additional pressure on stormwater infrastructure.
The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency, or HYDRAA, has outlined lake restoration works undertaken during its first two phases. The state has also approved a third phase, which is expected to extend restoration efforts to additional water bodies. The government is now placing particular emphasis on smaller lakes. Corporate funding could potentially support activities such as desilting, strengthening lake boundaries, improving inflow and outflow channels and creating better public access, depending on the requirements of individual water bodies. However, CSR funding alone cannot address the structural challenges facing Hyderabad’s lakes. Restoration also requires effective land-use regulation, protection of feeder channels and prevention of encroachment. Without these measures, restored lakes could face renewed stress over time. There is also a need for transparent project selection and monitoring. Companies contributing CSR funds would benefit from clear information on project objectives, costs, timelines and measurable environmental outcomes. Public reporting could help ensure that restoration efforts deliver lasting benefits rather than short-term beautification.
The initiative also places citizens alongside government and businesses in the conservation process. Local communities are often among the first to experience the effects of flooding, water shortages or deteriorating urban water bodies. Their involvement can therefore help identify local priorities and improve long-term maintenance. For Hyderabad, lake restoration has implications well beyond environmental protection. A functioning network of water bodies can strengthen climate resilience, reduce flood risks and support water security as the metropolitan region grows. The success of the CSR approach will ultimately depend on whether corporate contributions are integrated into a wider, science-based lake management strategy. Combining private funding with strong public oversight and community participation could give Hyderabad a more durable approach to protecting its remaining urban water assets.
