Hyderabad Summit Maps Telangana’s Clean Energy Future
Hyderabad hosted the sixth India Energy Summit and Expo on August 18 and 19, bringing policymakers, utilities, investors and technology companies together to discuss Telangana’s changing energy needs. The discussions focused on renewable power, storage, smart grids, electric mobility and the growing electricity demand from data centres and artificial intelligence.
Telangana’s energy roadmap featured prominently at the two-day event. The state plans to increase solar capacity to nearly 20,000 MW by 2030 and beyond 26,000 MW by 2035. It also aims to develop nearly 8,000 MW of energy storage capacity by 2035 through battery and pumped-storage projects. The scale of the proposed expansion reflects a wider challenge. Hyderabad is developing rapidly as a technology and business centre, while manufacturing and digital infrastructure are adding to electricity demand. Data centres and AI facilities can require substantial and continuous power, making reliable supply increasingly important for future investment. Storage is expected to play a central role in managing this demand. Renewable generation can fluctuate depending on weather and daylight conditions. Battery and pumped-storage systems can help balance supply and demand, allowing renewable electricity to support the grid beyond periods of solar generation.
Grid modernisation was another major focus. Discussions at the summit examined smart grids, transmission upgrades and digital systems that can improve reliability. For a growing city such as Hyderabad, stronger distribution networks will be important as electricity consumption increases across residential, commercial and industrial areas. The event also connected clean energy with transportation. Electric mobility, charging infrastructure and cleaner fuels were discussed alongside renewable generation. Better integration between these sectors could help reduce dependence on fossil fuels while supporting the expansion of low-emission transport. Green hydrogen was another area of discussion, reflecting the state and national push towards alternative industrial fuels. Its development, however, will depend on the availability of affordable renewable electricity, infrastructure and viable markets. Financing remains a critical factor. Large-scale renewable projects, transmission networks and storage facilities require substantial investment. Industry discussions therefore examined financing models that can support the transition without weakening energy affordability or reliability.
The summit also highlighted the growing relationship between energy and technology. Digital monitoring, intelligent power management and storage systems could help utilities respond more efficiently to changing consumption patterns. For Telangana, the challenge now moves from setting targets to delivering infrastructure. Solar capacity, storage, transmission and distribution systems will need to expand together. Environmental safeguards and responsible land use will also become increasingly important as renewable projects grow. The discussions in Hyderabad underline a broader reality: the state’s economic ambitions will depend heavily on how efficiently it can build a cleaner and more resilient energy system. Meeting that demand while keeping power reliable and affordable will shape Telangana’s next phase of urban and industrial growth.
