Hyderabad Accelerates Godavari Water Project For 2027
Hyderabad is accelerating work on its next major drinking water infrastructure programme, with authorities directing construction agencies to increase manpower, machinery and simultaneous work across multiple sites. The Godavari Drinking Water Supply Scheme’s second and third phases are now targeted for completion by October 2027.
The project is estimated to cost ₹7,360 crore and is designed to strengthen Hyderabad’s drinking water security as the city continues to expand. Under the scheme, around 20 TMC ft of Godavari water is planned to be brought from Mallannasagar. Of this allocation, 17.50 TMC ft is intended for Hyderabad’s drinking water requirements. The remaining 2.50 TMC ft is planned for the rejuvenation of Osmansagar, Himayatsagar and the Musi system. The Hyderabad Godavari water project includes several interconnected components. These include a major water treatment plant, a master balancing reservoir and a network of pipelines that will carry treated water towards the city. During a recent inspection, officials reviewed construction of the 1,170 million-litre-per-day water treatment plant at Ghanpur. Civil and technical works were examined, with instructions issued to accelerate construction while maintaining required quality standards.
An 80-million-litre master balancing reservoir is also under construction. Authorities have asked agencies working on the treatment plant, reservoir and pipelines to coordinate their schedules so that one component does not delay another. Around 10 km of pipeline construction has already been completed under the first two packages, according to officials. Increasing the pace of work across different sections is expected to help maintain the October 2027 completion target. The project has wider significance for Hyderabad’s urban development. Population growth, expanding residential areas and increasing commercial activity are placing greater pressure on the city’s water network. Reliable bulk water infrastructure will become increasingly important as development extends into peripheral areas.
The planned allocation for water-body rejuvenation also gives the project an environmental dimension. Restoring urban reservoirs and the Musi system could support water resilience, although the long-term impact will depend on how effectively these assets are protected from pollution and encroachment. Large water infrastructure projects also require careful coordination with existing roads, utilities and communities. Construction activity can create temporary disruption, while delays in one package can affect the wider system. The Hyderabad Godavari water project therefore needs to balance speed with quality and environmental safeguards. Meeting the 2027 target will require sustained construction progress, effective inter-agency coordination and transparent monitoring. For a rapidly growing Hyderabad, expanding water supply is not only an infrastructure requirement. It is central to supporting future housing, employment and economic growth without placing unsustainable pressure on existing water sources.
