Hyderabad Study Flags Risks In Anganwadi Egg Supply
Hyderabad’s early childhood nutrition programmes face fresh scrutiny as new research flags gaps in the city’s egg supply chain, raising concerns about quality, safety, and equitable access for children in low-income settlements. The findings point to systemic weaknesses that could undermine public health goals and hinder efforts to reduce stunting among vulnerable communities.
A multi-institutional team of researchers examining food supply patterns in two dense settlements—Addagutta and Warasiguda—found that Anganwadi centres may be receiving smaller and potentially lower-quality eggs than those available in the retail market. The study, completed last year under an international research collaboration, highlights how inconsistencies in food standards can disproportionately affect communities that depend on State-supported nutrition interventions. While eggs remain a key component of Hyderabad’s supplementary feeding programmes for pregnant women, lactating mothers, and young children, researchers noted that the broader supply network functions with limited regulatory oversight. Much of the trade occurs through informal arrangements between traders, wholesalers, and poultry farms, relying heavily on personal relationships instead of documented quality checks. According to researchers, this environment leaves room for questionable practices, including the diversion of substandard produce toward public food schemes.
Urban nutrition experts say the issue reveals deeper structural concerns about how essential food items move through rapidly growing Indian cities. Without robust cold-chain infrastructure or routine inspections, perishable goods like eggs face a higher risk of spoilage and contamination. In densely populated neighbourhoods with limited access to clean water and sanitation, any drop in food quality can amplify health risks—especially for young children who are already nutritionally vulnerable. One of the most alarming findings relates to the widespread circulation of cracked eggs. Though often sold at a discount or consumed within the supply chain, cracked shells can allow harmful bacteria such as Salmonella to enter the egg. Several stakeholders interviewed in the study reported that these eggs are typically boiled before use, but researchers caution that inconsistent cooking practices and poor hygiene conditions can still leave children exposed to foodborne illnesses.
Seasonal fluctuations further complicate the challenge. During Hyderabad’s long summers, when temperatures regularly cross 40°C, spoilage accelerates sharply in the absence of refrigerated storage or transport. Many traders operate without cold rooms, and only a small fraction of supermarkets maintain temperature-controlled systems. Researchers note that extreme heat can reduce egg shelf life to just a week or two, compared to nearly two months in cooler periods—a shift that may also affect nutrition content and taste. Public health specialists argue that the findings underscore the need for stronger urban food governance. Beyond scaling up inspections, they emphasise the importance of investing in decentralised cold chains, clear quality standards, and transparent procurement processes for government-run nutrition programmes. With Hyderabad continuing to expand rapidly, they say ensuring safe and nutritious food for children must be viewed as part of a broader strategy for building equitable, resilient, and healthy cities.
