Hyderabad is preparing for one of India’s largest digital infrastructure expansions, with senior officials projecting interest for 8–10 gigawatts of data centre capacity in and around Hyderabad over the next few years. The scale, if realised, would place the region among Asia’s fastest-growing data ecosystems—bringing significant implications for energy demand, land use, workforce development, and long-term sustainability.
Officials from the Government of Telangana indicated at a recent technology and infrastructure conclave that the State’s current ecosystem already hosts close to one gigawatt of installed capacity, representing a substantial share of India’s operational data centre volume. The upcoming phase, they suggested, will be driven by hyperscalers, cloud providers, and enterprise players seeking low-cost power, competitive construction economics, and resilient connectivity. Energy administrators noted that Telangana’s preparations are centred on ensuring reliable, scalable, and increasingly clean power, as data centres are among the most electricity-intensive urban infrastructures. Officials highlighted the State’s Clean Green Energy Policy 2025, which aims to reduce long-term operational expenses for industry while steering future capacity towards renewable-based supply.
Industry observers say this shift mirrors a broader national transformation. While Mumbai and Chennai have historically dominated India’s data centre landscape, the Hyderabad metro region is emerging as a preferred hub due to stable land parcels, lower power tariffs, and rapidly maturing fibre networks. India currently handles about a fifth of global data traffic yet hosts only a fraction of global data centre stock, suggesting a massive buildout over the next decade. Sector specialists also pointed to India’s cost advantage. Building a megawatt of capacity domestically is estimated to cost 50–60% less than similar construction in the US—an economic gap that continues to attract large-scale investors. For Telangana, this investment wave offers the potential to anchor new high-tech clusters, create specialised employment, and strengthen the city’s digital backbone.
However, experts cautioned that scaling data infrastructure at this pace demands a stronger sustainability mandate. Large-format facilities consume vast quantities of energy and water, and without strict efficiency norms, the environmental footprint could strain already-stressed urban resources. Specialists stressed the need for enforceable renewable-energy sourcing, battery-based backup systems, and higher-efficiency cooling technologies—particularly as climate-driven heatwaves increase cooling loads across the region. Workforce gaps also emerged as a key constraint. Multiple operators reported shortages in mechanical systems, plumbing, electrical engineering, and advanced cooling operations—skill sets critical for building and maintaining modern data centres. Some companies are already sourcing talent from outside India to meet immediate demand, underscoring the urgency for targeted skilling programmes within Telangana. As Hyderabad positions itself as a major node in India’s digital economy, planners argue that the coming years will be decisive. The task ahead is not only to capture investment but to ensure that every additional gigawatt aligns with resource-efficient, low-carbon, and climate-resilient development, keeping citizens and sustainability at the centre of the State’s digital growth story.
