Delhi is preparing for one of its largest road infrastructure expansions in recent years, with authorities advancing seven major transport projects aimed at easing chronic congestion across the National Capital Region while improving airport, interstate and suburban connectivity.
The proposed network of tunnels, elevated corridors and expressway links is expected to reshape travel patterns across Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad and Ghaziabad over the next decade. The planned interventions come at a time when vehicle ownership in NCR continues to rise faster than road capacity, placing sustained pressure on arterial corridors such as Ring Road, NH-48, Kalindi Kunj and routes leading to Indira Gandhi International Airport. Urban planners say the projects could reduce bottlenecks and freight delays, though long-term gains will depend on integrating road expansion with public transport and emission-control measures. Among the most significant proposals is a new connector between Urban Extension Road-II and the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway near Tronica City. Officials involved in the planning process indicate the corridor is intended to divert long-distance traffic away from inner Delhi routes while improving access for western and north-western districts. The project is also expected to support logistics movement linked to industrial clusters on the city’s periphery.
Another high-impact proposal is a nearly 20-kilometre elevated corridor linking south Delhi with Gurugram through AIIMS, INA, Vasant Kunj and Mahipalpur. Transport experts believe the stretch could substantially ease traffic pressure on the Mehrauli-Gurugram corridor, one of NCR’s busiest daily commuter routes. However, mobility researchers caution that elevated infrastructure must include adequate pedestrian access, drainage systems and noise mitigation to avoid worsening urban liveability challenges. A broader regional expressway plan connecting the Delhi–Meerut and Delhi–Dehradun expressways with Noida, Faridabad and the Yamuna Expressway is also under consideration. The proposal is expected to improve east-west movement across NCR, especially for freight and intercity traffic that currently passes through dense residential areas.
The Delhi road projects also include service roads along UER-II to separate local and high-speed traffic, a signal-free tunnel connecting Dwarka Expressway with Nelson Mandela Road, and a new interchange near Kalindi Kunj intended to ease recurring congestion around the Okhla barrage crossing. Infrastructure analysts note that while expanded highways may improve travel efficiency in the short term, Delhi’s future mobility strategy cannot rely solely on road construction. Rising temperatures, worsening air quality and increasing fuel consumption remain critical concerns for the capital region. Experts argue that new corridors should be aligned with electric mobility infrastructure, urban greening and integrated multimodal transport planning. Several of the projects are targeted for execution between late 2026 and 2027, subject to approvals and land readiness. For millions of commuters across NCR, the success of these Delhi road projects will ultimately be measured not only by reduced travel time, but by whether they create safer, cleaner and more predictable urban movement across one of India’s most congested metropolitan regions.
